PETER BISHOP finds he’s daydreaming rather than writing his promised essay –and then he finds he’s daydreaming to some purpose…

Mornings, 8 till 9.30, I like to sit in a café and write. This last month I was hoping I’d be writing about Chekhov, friendship, marriage, sadness –continuing the essay I’d begun with such hope and energy last month. But each time I’d be at my table –I’m territorial about the back table at The Elephant Bean– I’d find my thoughts would keep drifting away: a slightly anxious daydreaming… (more…)
