Hello, my name is Jenni Mitchell and I’m reading a poem I wrote while working as an artist in residence on board the Hurtigruten coastal steamer in Norway.
And the night sky has to be just right.
Dark clear, cold and cloudless.
Stars and a moonrise can share the glow;
a mere hint of cloud will make such a dense
barrier as to cause great disappointment.
A mystical transcendence befalls the viewer
who glimpses the brilliance of a glowing star through
the iridescent silk veil of an aurora.
Disbelief as her green stain bleeds slowly into the black night.
Each night’s entrance a new dance.
Sometimes she is slow, quiet;
barely an arched twinge of light
only to fades as quickly as she arrives.
And the next she may screech her arrival with a frantic
curtain of swirling wildness;
a dance of green and gold and red
across the night sky and beck and bow and rise
and fall leave then return;
seducing the viewer to dare to dance the final night
under her icy spell of another place –
the final dance into the icy shimmer green and
ink black reflection of the engulfing sea.
